Headache

About Headache

Approximately 78% of adults experience a tension-type headache at some point in their lives. There appears to be a slightly higher prevalence of this type of headache among women and more women than men seek treatment. Tension-type headache, the most common form of headache, is a nonspecific headache, which is not vascular or migrainous, and is not related to organic disease. The underlying cause of tension-type headache is likely due to chemical and neuronal imbalances in the brain and may be related to muscle tightening in the back of the neck and/or scalp. The pain is pressing or tightening, of mild to moderate intensity, and occurs on both sides of the head. Some sufferers describe a band-like sensation around the neck and/or head which is a "vice-like" ache located in the forehead, temples or the back of the head and/or neck. The pain is not aggravated by routine physical activity. Rarely are there associated symptoms such as nausea or sensitivity to light or noise.

What Causes Headache?

Many people cite stress as an important headache trigger. Studies also show that people who are prone to stress as well as anxiety and depression are more likely to suffer from frequent headaches. Women are more likely to have a headache than men. Dental abscesses, post-extraction infection and difficulties with the joint of the jaw can cause pain in the local area, as well as referred pain to the face and head.

Misaligned teeth can also increase muscular tension in the jaw and contribute to recurring headache.

Hormonal influences - Migraines affect more women than men, and some researchers believe that sex hormones play a key role. For around half of these women, migraine occurs in the few days prior to or following their menstrual period. Some studies suggest that reduced levels of the sex hormone oestrogen around the time of menstruation may be to blame.

Eye problems - If a person has difficulties with their vision, such as long-sightedness, they tend to squint and strain the eye muscles in order to better focus their vision. Eye diseases like glaucoma can cause headache by referring pain into the structures of the head.

What Can I Do About Headache?

Massage therapy relieves a headache by releasing the tension that causes the throbbing pain. This is good for stress related headaches. Another pleasant way of relieving a headache is by using aromatherapy and for adults - sex is another pleasant way of relieving your headache, as an orgasm triggers natural tension release! Also good for prevention of headaches! There are also several supplements available that can assist in headache relief. You should also make sure you drink plenty of water and are not consuming too much cafienne.

Additional information

Medication overuse headache can also affect people who use painkillers too often. They get their headache whenever the painkiller starts to wear off so they take another dose. The medicine which once cured the headache is now causing the headache.
