About Skin Disorders

The skin is one of the most vulnerable organs of the body. Though seldom life threatening, skin disorders can be uncomfortable and may cause chronic disabilities. Skin disorders cover a wide range of conditions, which range from the benign, to the very serious. Some skin conditions can even convey signs of another underlying illness. General terms covering the skin are Cutaneous: Having to do with the skin. Dermatitis: Dermatitis of the skin. Epidermis: The outermost layer of skin. Erythema: Redness of the skin. As there are a consiserable number of skin conditions so therefore we will only cover the more common forms here. Serious skin problems should be refered to a dermatologist.

What Causes Skin Disorders?

There are many types of skin inflammations (rashes) some causes are: Infections: Bacteria, viruses and fungi are common causes of skin rashes. Infestations: Some skin rashes are caused by tiny parasites like lice and mites. Irritants and Allergies: Insect bites or stings, plants like poison ivy or grevillea's, certain foods, abrasion, heat or excessive sun exposure, chemical pollutants, medications, chemicals found in household cleaners, cosmetics, an overly dry environment - this is just a sampling of possible causes of skin rashes.

What Can I Do About Skin Disorders?

Good skin care can accelerate healing and reduce the discomfort of skin rashes. It can also decrease the risk of secondary infection or scarring. Below are some skin care tips, however, they do depend on your specific condition. So you should consult a doctor.

  •  Use a mild soap, or just water, to clean the affected area.
  •  When bathing, use warm, not hot, water. (Very hot water will dry out your skin.)
  •  Don’t scrub your skin. Ideally, use your hands, not a wash cloth, to apply soap.
  •  Take showers or quick baths. (Long soaks dehydrate your skin.)
  •  Dry your skin gently, by patting, not rubbing, which can remove important natural oils.
  •  Keep your skin well-moisturized throughout the day but avoid moisturizers that clog the pores or are highly perfumed. Best time to apply a moisturizer: immediately after patting dry.
  •  Wear natural fibers, like cotton, that allow air to circulate over affected areas.
  •  Apply cool or lukewarm compresses to itchy or sore areas.
  •  Moderate sun exposure will help some conditions, however, you should avoid around several hours either side of mid-day and use sun-sense.
