What Causes Eye Strain?
Eye strain occurs when you over-use your eye muscles. Any muscle held in one position too long will strain. When you concentrate on a task such as reading, working at the computer or watching television for any length of time; your inner eye muscles tighten up causing your eyes to get irritated, dry and uncomfortable.
What Can I Do About Eye Strain?
To give your eyes a chance to refocus, once or twice an hour, take a five-minute break from whatever you're doing. If you're over age 40, eyestrain may also be a sign that you need reading glasses...
Computers - One of the best things you can do for your eyes when working on PCs or in other eyestraining situations is to take short breaks. Simple one-minute eye exercises done every 20 minutes can reduce eye fatigue. Change focus by glancing across the room or look out the window and focus on objects at least 20 feet away. Then, lightly cup your eyes with your palms, and relax for 60 seconds. Or, look away from the screen, and roll your eyes up and down, around and side to side.
Reading - Hold the reading material about 30 to 40 centimetres away from your eyes. Ensure you have adequate soft light coming from a source behind or beside your left shoulder-use a lamp with a 60-to 100-watt bulb. Take a break every hour or so by looking at distant objects for three or four minutes. Follow the same guidelines for other close work, such as sewing, knitting and drawing.
Driving - On bright or hazy days, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare and harmful ultraviolet rays. If you're on a long trip, stop every few hours to rest your eyes and stretch.
Additional information
Poor lighting affects not only the ocular system but can also contribute to stiff necks and aches in shoulder area. These problems can occur when people adopt poor or awkward postures when trying to read something under poor lighting conditions.
