What Causes Leg Ulcers?
The most common cause of leg ulcers is poor blood circulation, particularly the inability of the veins to return deoxygenated blood from the legs back to the heart. Other causes or exacerbating factors include relentless pressure (bed sores), badly managed diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, dietary problems and poor arterial circulation. Older people are at greater risk.
What Can I Do About Leg Ulcers?
Stop smoking and lose weight if you are overweight. Reduce the amount of fat in your diet and eat more fruit and vegetables. Exercise as much as possible. By exercising, you force your blood vessels to form new branches, improving the blood circulation in your legs. Activate your calf muscles regularly by walking and exercising.
If you have to stay seated for a long time, move your feet up and down occasionally.
Treatment may involve wound cleansing, anti-inflammatory treatment and application of dressings. So long as there is no arterial disease, venous leg ulcers will benefit from elevation and compression dressings.
Additional information
Some ulcers are clearly caused by problems in the veins. This should be confirmed by clinical assessment and on special investigations. If this is the case then compression treatment should be commenced. It should only be applied after the arteries have been assessed by measuring the ankle-brachial index. This is because if compression is applied and the arteries are badly diseased, this can damage the ulcer and the leg, and make matters worse.
