Sciatica
About Sciatica
Sciatica is the term given to pain down the leg, which is caused by irritation of the main nerve into the leg, the sciatic nerve. This pain tends to be caused where the nerves pass through and emerge from the lower bones of the spine (lumbar vertebrae). Sciatica occurs most frequently in people between 30 and 50 years of age. Often a particular event or injury does not cause sciatica, but rather it may develop as a result of general wear and tear on the structures of the lower spine. The vast majority of people who experience sciatica get better with time (usually a few weeks or months) and find pain relief with non-surgical treatments.

What Causes Sciatica?
The most common cause of true sciatica is a "slipped disc". The discs (or inter-vertebral discs) are the cushions which separate the bones of the spine (vertebrae). Your doctor may refer to a slipped disc as a prolapsed intervertebral disc (PID) or a herniated nucleus pulposus.
What Can I Do About Sciatica?
Pain relief may involve a combination of therapies, including medication, mechanical therapy, invasive therapy, and behavior therapy. Pain relievers, also known as analgesics, are the most often used medication for relieving pain. Both over-the-counter and prescription pain relievers are available. Mechanical therapy relieves pain by focusing on muscles and connective tissue involved in an injury. Invasive therapy may involve simple injections or surgical implants. Behavior therapy helps you modify personal pain triggers and adust your lifestyle to help relieve and manage pain.
Additional information
Treatment is initially aimed at addressing the inflammation associated with sciatica. Rest, anti-inflammatory medications (such as Motrin or Celebrex), and muscle relaxers are often good places to start. Some patients require a more powerful anti-inflammatory treatment and are given oral steroids. These steroids do have potential side-effects, but the powerful anti-inflammatory effect can be helpful in the treatment of sciatica.
To be most effective, nutritional supplements work better in combination. It may be more beneficial to take a variety of Herbs or Nutrients for more rapid and complete healing...
