Varicose Veins

About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are the largest ropey veins seen in the legs and spider veins are the smaller, often red or blue colored, veins. Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning correctly to help bring blood back up towards the heart. The walls of the veins are thinner, much less elastic and weaker then the walls of arteries.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Arteries carry blood from the heart towards the body parts, while veins carry blood from the body parts back to the heart. As the blood is pumped back to the heart, veins act as one-way valves to prevent the blood from flowing backwards. If the one-way valve becomes weak, some of the blood can leak back into the vein, collect there, and then become congested or clogged. This congestion will cause the vein to abnormally enlarge.

What Can I Do About Varicose Veins?

The conservative approach for treating varicose veins is to wear properly fitting support hose (also called compression stockings), especially when the veins are symptomatic.

These stockings can generally be purchased at surgical supply stores and come in various styles including below-the-knee, above-the-knee and pantyhose styles, other treatments include practicing good skin hygiene, losing weight, if you are overweight, exercising regularly (especially walking), avoiding prolonged periods of sitting or standing and elevating your legs while sitting and sleeping.

Additional information

Laser therapy is most effective for small facial and leg blood vessels, as the laser beam selectively heats the blood vessel and destroys it.

Severe or very large varicose veins may require surgical treatment in which the dilated vein is either removed or tied off through a small incision in the skin. The surgery is done in the hospital or outpatient setting by a vascular surgeon.
