MGO™ Manuka Honey is labelled based on the minimum Methylglyoxal content (mg/kg) it contains. As Methylglyoxal is the active compound directly responsible for the antibacterial activity of Manuka honey, the higher the Methylglyoxal content of MGO™ Manuka Honey, the stronger the antibacterial activity.
As methylglyoxal is only found in significant quantities in some manuka honey, testing and certification is important to guarantee methylglyoxal content and activity.
The University of Dresden (Germany) tests have found a minimum 100mg/kg of dietary methylglyoxal is required to be of benefit.
MGO™ 550+ Manuka Honey is certified to contain at least 550 mg/kg of methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound responsible for the unique bioactive properties of genuine manuka honey.
MGO™ 550+ Manuka Honey has the highest level of methylglyoxal available from Manuka Health.
Manuka Honey can be eaten straight from the spoon, added to hot beverages, spread on fruits or toast, as a sugar alternative and used in many recipies.
